Biking Etiquette in South Lake Tahoe

Whether you are bringing your own bike on your Lake Tahoe vacation or renting one from Pine Nut Cycle Cafe, you want to be aware of the rules of the trail for cyclists. These bike etiquette tips apply to mountain biking trails and paved paths around South Lake Tahoe. They also hold true for e-bikes, mountain bikes, and traditional bikes.

By sticking to these rules, you make biking in South Lake Tahoe an enjoyable experience for everyone and help preserve the local environment.

Rules to Follow When Biking in Lake Tahoe

Several decades ago, the International Mountain Biking Association created a set of rules for cyclists to adhere to when they are out in nature. These rules are designed to protect cyclists and non-riders from injury by preventing collisions, and also work to preserve nature so that Lake Tahoe continues to be the perfect retreat for years to come. But these etiquette rules are also a good idea to follow wherever you are biking around Tahoe.

If this is one of your first biking trips or you need a refresher on the rules of the trail, be sure to follow these standard etiquette tips when you are on your bike:

  • Bike Only in Designated Places - Biking can have a significant impact on fragile ecosystems and Lake Tahoe has many conservation areas that are protected. Make sure you bike only on designated trails and only when those trails are open. Also, never trespass on private property with your bike unless you have the correct authorization. For e-bikers, you should be aware as well that some trails in South Lake Tahoe are closed to e-bikes.

  • Leave No Trace - For any outdoor activity in Lake Tahoe, always follow Leave No Trace principles. This involves packing out everything you pack in and leaving behind only footprints and tire tracks - and then only on trails.

  • Maintain Control of Your Bike - Any bike at high speeds can cause significant injury to you and those around you. Know your limits and stay within them. Keep focused on the trail in front of you and your surroundings throughout your ride.

  • Do Not Engage with Wildlife - Pictures of Lake Tahoe’s animals from a distance are alright, but otherwise do not approach any wildlife and never feed animals you encounter on the trail. Getting too close to wildlife can be dangerous for both you and the animals.

  • Know the Right of Way Rules - You should bike on the right side of trails and paths. When you are on a path open to hikers and bikers, bikers are required to yield to hikers. You are also required to yield to horses. If the trail is wide enough, you can pass hikers on the left, but let them know you are coming with a bell or by calling out “on your right.” To pass a biker going in the other direction, the one going downhill should yield to the one going uphill. For safety, you should expect there is always someone around every turn and bike accordingly.

Following these rules and staying polite throughout your ride will help you have an enjoyable time and enable South Lake Tahoe to keep biking trails open for exciting adventures.
